Wayanad is located in the north- east corner of the Indian state of Kerala. It shares borders with the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Spanning over two thousand square kilometers, Wayanad is a mixed bag of exotic destinations waiting to be explored.

WAYANAD

The vast stretches of mist – capped mountains green meadows of valleys, white water springs, blue water lakes and wild forest fabricate the splendid natural beauty of Wayanad. Taking advantage of this natural endowments, recreational facilities in Wayanad can be widened very much.

Historically and culturally the importance of Wayanad lies very closely linked with its temples. Thirunelly temple, Jain temples at Sulthan Bathery and Panamaram and Valliyoorkav at Mananthavady historically date back from 12th to 16th centuries and the temples show that Wayanad was a habitat of mankind and place of civilization even in very old times. These temples are the living testimony of the cultural heritage of Wayanad.

BANASURA DAM: WAYANAD DAM

Banasura Sagar Dam is the biggest earth dam in India and second largest in Asian Continent. It is built at the base of Banasura Hill, across a small river Karimanthodu-one of the tributaries of Kabani River. It is one of the most visited tourist places of Wayanad now. Protected and titivated by the evergreen mountains all around, it has a vast catchment area which provides ample area to enjoy the speed boat/ motor boat experience to the maximum.

CHAIN TREE: 

WAYANAD CHAIN TREE

Chain Tree Lakkidi is located near Lakkidi view point. It’s a Large Ficus tree bounded by a long chain. The Chain carries a mythical story behind it. During British Colonial rule, Lakkidi  to Adivaram (Hill base) path was a secret route for local Adivasis of Wayanad.It is believed that the chain grows along with the tree. This place became a point of interest for students and historians over the time.

CHEMBARA PEAK:

WAYANAD PEAK

 

Chembra Peak, at a whopping height of about 2100 m above sea level claims to be the highest peak in Wayanad. Chembra Peak is one of the finest view points of Wayanad and best hard trekking places of Kerala. A little wonder waiting for travelers after covering quarter of the trek  A small heart shaped lake on the mountain which never ever dries up, not even during peak summer.

EDAKKAL CAVES:

WAYANAD CAVE

Edakkal caves are two natural caves (cleft between rocks) on a mountain called Ambukuthy Mala near Ambalavayal Town in Wayanad. It is believed to be an amazing 7000 years old wonder. The cleft is naturally formed out of disposition of three huge boulders with 96 Feet length and 22 Feet width possess a depth of 30 Feet.

JAIN TEMPLE:

WAYANAD JAIN TEMPLE

Jain Temple Sulthan Bathery is located on National High way just near to the town. This ancient Jain temple provides serene feelings for visitors. It is believed that the Emperor Tippu Sulthan stored his ammunition at this place during his reign.

KARAPUZHA DAM:

WAYANAD KARAPUZHA

Karapuzha Dam is considered to be the second largest earth dam of India. It is a fine place for an unwinding evening, with gentle breeze, amazingly scenic sky and waterfront. A bouquet of nearly a dozen lakes merged together to form this reservoir in Karapuzha river, a small tributary of Kabani river.

KURUVA ISLAND:

Kuruva Islands is an amazing bunch of 150 tiny islands with a green blanket cover of thick Mangrove forest mixed with lush green bamboos and other big trees. It is spread over in 950 acres land amidst the chirpy tributaries of Kabani river is famously called Kuruva Dweep (Island). One of the best spot of eco tourism, Kuruva is an example for rainforest of Wayanad.

LAKKIDI VIEW POINT:

Lakkidi View Point is a spectacular view point with snooty misty mountain peaks and tiny burbling streams that runs down from the rock behind. The scenic beauty of this view point is at its full splendor in morning and evening. It is known as the gate way of Wayanad.

MEENMUTTY WATERFALLS:

WAYANAD MEENMUTTY

 

Being one of the best waterfalls of Kerala, Meenmutty waterfalls is a ‘not to miss’ spot in Wayanad. A three tired splendor cascading down from an amazing height of 300 meter is worthy even after long trekking of 2 km to reach there. The rocky trek with help of ropes is a scintillating experience for youth.

MUTHANGA WILD LIFE:

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is located near to Kerala-Karnataka Border. It is connected with Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and Bandipur Wild life Sanctuary in Karnataka. An enormous variety of wild animals including Elephants, Bison, Tigers and various species of Deer and Monkeys, are seen here.

NEELIMALA VIEW POINT:

Neelimala View Point, one of the best view points in Wayanad, not frequented by visitors come for short stay. The path goes further up and suddenly opens up into a panoramic view, with the mountain folds of the Western Ghats on your left and a hill slope sated with grass and boulders on the right. The seldom explored view point that offers astounding scenery which can hypnotize a nature lover.

PAKSHIPATHALAM:

Pakshipathalam is the best place for long trekking in Wayanad. Not visited by too many visitors as this trekking is little hard and  can’t be accessed easily. Lot of varieties of rare species of birds can be seen during the trek through the thick forest and at Pakshipathalam.

POOKOT LAKE:

Pookot Lake is a naturally formed lake at the tryst of three hill bases, but at an altitude of 800 meter above sea level, is undoubtedly a visual treat.   Nestled among mountains with dense forest, that line along the trail around tranquil water which embellish with mesmerizing array of blue Lotus and water Lillies together.

RARS:

WAYANAD RESEARCH

RARS (Regional Agricultural Research Station) is located at Ambalavayal in Wayanad. Regional Agricultural Research Station for High range zone is functioning since pre Independence era. It provides research support for agriculture in the High Range zone (Wayanad & Idukki districts and Nelliyampathy area of Palakkad district).

SOOCHIPARA WATERFALLS:

WAYANAD SOOCHIPARA

Soochipara waterfalls alias Sentinel Rock waterfalls, is located at Vellarimala village near Chooralmala. It is around 25 min drive from Meppady town in Wayanad.  The winding roads amidst tea plantations and natural forests will take you to this astonishingly beautiful waterfall.

THOLPETTY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY:

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, close to Karnataka border. It is conveniently located on Wayanad Coorg Route, with a little deviation. An opportunity to get closer to wild life of Western Ghats, the Tholpetty Wild Life Sanctuary is abundant with many animals like Bison, Deer, Langur , Wild Squirrel , Jungle cat , Elephant and numerous birds.

PAZHASSI TOMB:

WAYANAD PAZHASSI

Pazhassi tomb was built in memory of Great King, Veera Kerala Varma Pazhassiraja. He fought Guerilla war against British Army with the support of Kurichia’s (Warriors among Tribes of Wayanad). He is famously known as ‘The Lion of Kerala’. It will be a ‘must see’ spot for Historians, Patriots and Students as well.

THIRUNELLI TEMPLE:

WAYANAD THIRUNELLI

Thirunelli Temple is located near to Tholpetty Wild Life Sanctuary and Pakshipathalm Bird Sanctuary. It is one of the most ancient temples in Kerala. Lord Vishnu is the principal deity of the Temple. The Temple is believed to be as old as 2000 years or even more. Thirunelli temple draws pilgrims from all over. Majority of people come primarily for ancestral rites.

URAVU:

Uravu is a non-government organization in Wayanad. VYTHIRI:

Wayanad Heritage Museum is located at Ambalavayal near Sulthan Bathery. It is an archaeological museum that  has one of Kerala’s largest collections of the remnants of an era dating back to the 200 A.D. Main attractions of this museum are 2nd century artifacts, which reveal the ancient human civilization.
