The Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom at Vallarpadam is a prominent pilgrimage centre and irrespective of caste and caste, devotees from all parts of Kerala and outside come to the church to seek the blessings of Mary, the mother of Jesus, popularly known as Vallarpadathamma.
This ancient Christian church was built in AD 1524. Legends recall that the Portuguese merchants headed by Vasco da Gama enthroned the miraculous picture of Our Lady of Ransom at the shrine.
The church is devoted to the Holy Spirit, which is said to be the archetype in Asia.
The beautiful church was however shattered due to heavy flood in 1676. The church was re-established in 1676 and the famous picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected by Portuguese who carried it from their native land.
The church was declared as a special church by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 and in the year 1951, the Union Government of India declared it as major pilgrim centre.
