Thiruvanathapuram Zoo is located in the city of Thiruvanathapuram, spread over 55 acres of woodland, lake and turfs. It is one of the oldest zoos in India and Asia. Uthram Thirunal and British resident William Cullen formally established the zoo in 1857 with the collection of royal tigers, panthers, cheetahs, deer, boar and other wild animals by his brother Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, as an annex to the Napier Museum.
The Zoo was built and designed for recreational point at that time, but due to destruction of forest lands and wildlife, the aim of the zoo has changed to conservation.
This zoo abodes 82 species around the globe, which include indigenous species such as Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Indian Rhinoceros, Asiatic Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger, White Tiger, Leopard, Asian Elephants, Giraffes, Hippos, Zebras & Cape Buffaloes. It also have Snake Park, that displays the collection of both poisonous and non poisonous snakes.
