Thiruvalluvar Statue Kanyakumari

Thiruvalluvar Statue is a stone sculpture of the famous Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, the author of Thirikkural. It is located in a small island near the town of Kanyakumari.

The statue itself has a height of 95 feet and stands upon a 38 foot pedestal that represents the 38 chapters of virtue in the Thirukkural.

The combined height of the statue and pedestal is 133 feet, denoting the 133 chapters in the Thirukkural and it has total weight of 7000 tons.

The statue with its slight bend around the waist indicates the dancing pose of the ancient India deity Nataraja. It was sculpted by the Indian sculptor Dr.V.Ganapati Sthapati. Sthapati designed the statue to survive earthquakes of unexpected magnitude

Though the foundation was laid since 1979, by the then Prime Minister Morarji Desai, the installation and the sculpting works began in 1990, and its opening ceremony was on January 1, 2000 Millennium.

The monument was hit by the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004
