This Cathedral Basilica is located at Fort Kochi and it is one of the eight basilicas in India.
It is now counted as one of the heritage edifices of Kerala as this church is one of the finest and most impressive churches in India which attracts tourists around the globe, throughout the year.
It was built initially by the Portuguese and elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558, and has been spared by the Dutch conquerors who destroyed many Catholic buildings. Later the British demolished the structure and Bishop D Joao Gomes Ferreira commissioned a new building in 1887. It was consecrated in 1905 and Santa Cruz was proclaimed a Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
It’s place of devotion and a unique center where the history, architecture and artistic splendour join hands.
